What sets Beacon apart

Genuine expertise. Instruction from a literacy researcher and educator with 20+ years of experience, not a general tutor working from a script.

The Science of Reading. Structured, evidence-based methods including Orton-Gillingham and Wilson, proven to work for all readers and essential for struggling ones.

A real plan. Every student begins with a comprehensive assessment and a written learning plan, so progress is measured, not guessed at.

Wherever you are. Virtual sessions bring specialist-level instruction to families anywhere; in-person sessions are available across Monmouth and Ocean Counties in New Jersey.

Meet the Founder

I'm Dr. Tamara Cella, a literacy educator and researcher with more than twenty years of experience teaching reading and helping others teach it well. I hold a Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.) from Johns Hopkins University, and I'm a certified general and special education teacher and a CERI-certified Structured Literacy Classroom Teacher.

I'm also a university professor and work with a literacy research organization, where I study how children learn to read and what helps the students who struggle most. It means the instruction I provide isn't based on guesswork or trends; it's grounded in the science of reading and the latest research, applied one child at a time.

Throughout my career, I've worked with learners of every kind, from Pre-K children just beginning their journey to high schoolers and adults and across every grade in between. That range has taught me what truly moves a reader forward, and how to tailor instruction to the reader in front of me.

I founded Beacon Reading on a simple belief: every child can become a confident reader with the right, expert instruction, and families shouldn't have to settle for less to get it.

I'd love to help your child find their way.
